South Sudan's ruling SPLM is reorganising its structures, selecting candidates and preparing for its third national convention ahead of the next elections. Secretary-General Akol Paul Kordit says the movement is aiming for a national victory and a new governing programme, according to Eye Radio.

South Sudan's ruling SPLM party is continuing to reorganise its structures ahead of the upcoming elections and its third national convention. Its Secretary-General, Akol Paul Kordit, announced on Saturday 31 October that the process had been completed in Upper Nile State, according to Eye Radio.

The party selected its candidates for governor, the national and state parliaments, county council chairmanships and the Liberation Council. The process is to continue in the country's nine other states and three administrative areas. Akol Paul Kordit urged SPLM members not to obstruct their colleagues' participation.

The Secretary-General said the party was preparing for the elections while also organising its third convention since South Sudan's independence. He added that SPLM Chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit had called for a review of the party's policies and the development of a new governing programme.

The reorganisation follows the SPLM's announcement on 3 October that it was opening nominations for the December elections, and the reported receipt of 848 applications for its primaries on 18 October. The party had also threatened its dissenters with sanctions on 17 October, according to threats of sanctions against SPLM dissenters.
