The friendly between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam, scheduled for 5 January 2027, will serve as a test for Kenya to assess its preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The match will inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi and allow organisers to test infrastructure and logistics, according to Kenya’s principal secretary for sports, Elijah Mwangi.

The match between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam, scheduled for 5 January 2027 in Nairobi, will test Kenya’s ability to host AFCON 2027 with Uganda and Tanzania. The match will inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium and allow sports infrastructure and event organisation to be assessed, according to Elijah Mwangi, Kenya’s principal secretary for sports.

The stadium is part of Talanta Sports City, an almost completed sports complex whose international standards the government wants to showcase. The two clubs’ large global following should also help promote Kenya’s image, Elijah Mwangi said. Bayern have already played in the 2013 Club World Cup in Morocco, while Ajax’s first team are due to play an official match in Africa for the first time.

The match comes as preparations continue for AFCON 2027, following Kenya’s draw with Eritrea in qualifying and the announcement of the Raila Odinga Stadium’s inaugural match on 28 October.
