Kenyan Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi says Bayern Munich and Ajax are expected to send their senior teams for the exhibition match planned for the opening of Raila Odinga International Stadium. The 5 January 2027 match in Nairobi will also feature Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards and be funded by private sponsors, according to Capital FM.

Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, says Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam will field their senior teams in an exhibition match scheduled for 5 January 2027 to inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi. He dismissed reports that former players or reserve teams would be coming, according to Capital FM.

The match will also feature Kenyan clubs Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. Mwangi said the event would be funded by private sponsors, not public money. He said the two European clubs have more than 300 million supporters between them and described the match as an opportunity to promote Kenya’s sports infrastructure.

The clarification comes after the announcement on 28 October that Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam would inaugurate the stadium on 5 January. The match is also set to serve as a test for Kenya, co-host of AFCON 2027, as reported on 31 October in the article on the Bayern-Ajax match ahead of AFCON 2027.
