Aisha Yesufu urges Nigerians to fund Obi’s campaign

Aisha Yesufu, activist and ally of Peter Obi, calls on Nigerians to collectively fund the candidate’s 2027 presidential campaign. She says the mobilisation should allow citizens to directly support the candidacy and claims that contributions to the 2023 campaign were publicly recorded, according to Vanguard.

Aisha Yesufu, a Nigerian activist and ally of Peter Obi, called on Nigerians on Wednesday 4 November to contribute to funding the former Anambra State governor’s 2027 presidential campaign. In a video posted on X, she said Peter Obi could not bear the cost of the campaign alone and advocated direct funding by citizens, according to Vanguard.

Aisha Yesufu asked supporters to pay their contributions into an account intended for Peter Obi’s campaign. She specified that this collection was separate from that of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party behind Obi’s candidacy, which is due to publish its own bank details for donations to the party.

The activist recalled that a public fundraising campaign had already accompanied the 2023 campaign. She said the contributions had been published and recorded despite criticism, and promised the same transparency for the 2027 campaign.

Aisha Yesufu explained that Peter Obi had initially rejected crowdfunding before accepting the idea that donations would strengthen voter involvement. She said the previous model, in which the candidate largely financed campaign activities, was no longer viable.
