Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State and presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), presented his programme for Nigeria’s presidential election in Abuja on Wednesday 4 November. It proposes tackling the country’s economic difficulties, institutional weakness, insecurity and political problems, Premium Times reports.
The former official said Nigeria had sufficient natural and human resources to become a prosperous nation, but that its leaders lacked ideas for improving living conditions. His programme was drawn up following consultations in the country’s six geopolitical zones, including public meetings with citizens, according to Premium Times.
Seyi Makinde identified four concerns behind his candidacy, including the gap between macroeconomic reforms and citizens’ wellbeing, weak public institutions and poverty. He argued for assessing economic stability based on food prices, employment, incomes and the cost of living rather than on economic indicators alone.
The APM candidate also called for political promises to be linked to specific institutions, implementation plans and measurable targets. He said he wanted to reduce the structural cost of living by cutting production costs and improving the business environment, according to Premium Times.
