The projects are reported to be approximately 90% and 70% complete, respectively, according to Dele Alake, spokesperson for the ruling party's presidential campaign council.
The 205-kilometre Kaduna-Kano standard-gauge railway is approximately 90% complete, while the 400-kilometre Kano-Katsina-Maradi line has reached 70%, according to Dele Alake, spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
The Nigerian government says it inherited the Kano-Katsina-Maradi project in 2023 when it was approximately 5% complete, compared with less than 30% for the Kaduna-Kano line. The Kaduna-Kano line is intended to connect Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria and Kano by extending the Abuja-Kaduna railway link, according to Dele Alake.
An inspection team from the Federal Ministry of Transportation, led by Permanent Secretary Funso Adebiyi, recently assessed the works on the instructions of President Bola Tinubu. The inspection notably covered railway alignment, drainage, embankment protection, stone pitching and soil stabilisation.
A train trial was also conducted between Jaji, in Kaduna State, and Kano to assess the completed track and passenger comfort. The 190-kilometre Jaji-Kano section and the 250-kilometre Dawanu-Kano-Kazaure-Daura-Katsina section are due to be inaugurated on 3 December 2026, according to the Nigerian government.
