Four candidates for the 2027 governorship election in Nigeria’s Lagos State put forward differing positions on housing, the cost of living, taxation and public services during a debate organised by Channels Television and TVC on Sunday, Business Day Nigeria reports.
Funso Doherty, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said Lagos remained below its economic potential despite the taxes and levies paid by its residents. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, candidate of the African Democratic Congress, promised to prioritise a cleaner, safer and more affordable city, accusing successive governments of favouring wealthier populations, according to Business Day Nigeria.
The debate also covered access to housing and rising rents. Obafemi Hamzat, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, said the state had adopted a law requiring tenants to pay one year’s rent and that the next step was to enforce the rule and encourage tenants to report violations, Business Day Nigeria reports.
