Presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called for US intervention after attacks affected 11 villages in Kebbi State and displaced millions of Nigerians. He also called for the release of Bishiia Maisango, held without trial, during an exchange with the US commission on religious freedom on Friday.
Nigeria's presidential candidate for the Accord Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Friday called for US intervention in response to attacks reportedly targeting 11 villages in Kebbi State and the displacement of populations, during an exchange with the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, according to P.M. News. He cited attacks that took place in April 2026 in the communities of Kalkami, Tungar Bori and Kawara, attributed by local authorities to suspected bandits.
Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim also called for the release of Bishiia Maisango, a Hausa cultural activist whom he says is being held without trial. He accused the federal government of failing to adequately protect populations and called for respect for fundamental rights and constitutional guarantees, according to P.M. News.
Hashim cited data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimating the number of internally displaced people in Nigeria at about 3.68 million in October 2026. He said the violence affects different religious and ethnic groups and that some armed groups in the north of the country are seeking in particular to kill residents, destroy communities and control territories.
The call comes as the ADC calls for follow-up on two corruption cases in Nigeria in a publication dated 8 November, concerning proceedings separate from the security case mentioned by Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim.
