Peter Obi, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the 16 January 2027 presidential election, promises to end the erosion of national wealth if elected. His party links the pledge to revenue from the end of fuel subsidies, debt and public service funding, according to Vanguard.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party backing Peter Obi’s candidacy in Nigeria’s 16 January 2027 presidential election, says its ticket with Rabiu Kwankwaso wants to stop the erosion of national wealth. The party says it wants to address the contradictions between the expected gains from the removal of fuel subsidies, new government borrowing under Bola Tinubu and the underfunding of public budgets, according to Vanguard.
The NDC is notably calling for explanations about the budgetary benefits derived from the removal of subsidies, as revenues increase and debt obligations grow. The party says this situation comes amid poverty, unemployment, insecurity and falling purchasing power, according to Vanguard.
The NDC statement responds to remarks made on Friday by President Bola Tinubu at a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party, in Akwa Ibom State. Tinubu had criticised the former governor of Anambra State for failing to resolve erosion problems in the state, while saying he had fought the advance of the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos, Vanguard reports.
The position comes after Peter Obi asked Bola Tinubu on 7 November to account for 15.8 trillion naira. It also follows the president’s criticism of Peter Obi’s leadership, published on 6 November as part of the campaign for the 2027 presidential election. Peter Obi asks Tinubu to account for 15.8 trillion naira and Tinubu questions Peter Obi’s leadership in Nigeria
