Ghana recorded more than 50 incidents targeting journalists between 2022 and January 2026, including assaults, arrests and acts of harassment. The president of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, gave this assessment at the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, according to MyJoyOnline.
Albert Dwumfour called on the authorities to strengthen protection for media professionals. He said Ghana’s improved international ranking on press freedom should not obscure the difficulties faced by journalists. The country rose from 52nd place in 2025 to 39th in 2026 in the global press freedom ranking, according to figures presented by the GJA president.
The official notably referred to risks linked to investigations into corruption, questions put to public officials and coverage of security operations. He also cited economic insecurity, media independence and professional training among the challenges to be addressed. He called for the progress achieved to be preserved while persistent threats against journalists are addressed.
