For Vanguard, Trump defeat does not predict Nigeria’s 2027Number 10 · Open Government Licence (Royaume-Uni)

The Republican Party’s defeat in the 3 November US midterm elections does not, according to Kayode Akinmade, predict Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electoral prospects in 2027. Vanguard’s analysis highlights differences between the political systems and economic realities of the United States and Nigeria.

Democrats took control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, dealing a setback to Donald Trump’s Republican Party, according to Vanguard. The media outlet believes the result does not predict the outcome of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president.

Vanguard attributes the Republicans’ electoral difficulties in particular to the war between the United States and Iran, which began several months ago. The conflict has increased concerns about US military involvement, affected energy markets and contributed to higher fuel prices, fuelling concerns about the cost of living in the United States.

Donald Trump himself acknowledged that the conflict with Iran had contributed to his party’s electoral difficulties, while maintaining that military action was necessary, reports Vanguard.

In Nigeria, this comparison comes after Wike, Soludo and Adeleke publicly backed Tinubu’s re-election on 1 November, followed by Tinubu’s statements on the country’s financial situation and Soludo’s promise on 7 November to secure 50% of the votes in Anambra for him. These steps have intensified the debate over the 2027 presidential election within Nigeria’s ruling majority.
