Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos deputy governor and APC governorship candidate, says the state has implemented several recommendations of the judicial panel on the 2020 Lekki tollgate violence. He also reaffirmed the right to protest during an electoral debate on Sunday, according to Punch.
Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos State and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says the Lagos government has implemented several recommendations of the judicial commission tasked with investigating the events at the Lekki tollgate on 20 October 2020. He was speaking on Sunday during a debate between candidates in the Lagos governorship election, according to Punch.
Hamzat, who was already deputy governor at the time of the events, acknowledged that he had participated in decisions taken within the administration. He said the Lagos government subsequently set up an independent judicial commission and funded its work, before publishing a white paper implementing several of its recommendations, according to Punch.
He also reaffirmed that the government recognised the right to protest. The #EndSARS protests began in October 2020 after complaints about violence, harassment, extortion and extrajudicial killings attributed in particular to officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a police unit that has since been disbanded, reports Punch.
