A petition calling for CNews to be removed from French broadcasting surpassed one million signatures on Sunday. The National Assembly's Cultural Affairs Committee is due to vote on Tuesday between closing the petition and holding a debate, according to AFP.

A petition calling for CNews to be removed from French broadcasting surpassed one million signatures on Sunday, two days before a vote by the National Assembly's Cultural Affairs Committee on whether to close it or organise a debate in the chamber, reports AFP. Launched in June by an individual, it had reached 500,000 signatures last Monday and compares CNews to “a propaganda machine” or the US channel Fox News.

Of the three petitions that have already passed the 500,000-signature threshold, only the one against the Duplomb law led to a parliamentary debate, with more than two million signatures when it closed. The Law Committees closed in April a petition against Yadan's bill on antisemitism and in July a petition with more than 700,000 signatures on the presumption that the use of firearms by law enforcement officers is legitimate, according to AFP.

The “Libres de Canal” trade union, which represents employees of the group to which CNews belongs, said on Friday that it supported the channel's teams while criticising its “excesses” and saying that its editorial line did not correspond to the values it defended, reports AFP.
