Donald Trump says the United States is highly unlikely to order fresh strikes on Iran if talks progress and produce a solid agreement. The US president says Washington has nevertheless identified infrastructure that could be targeted if strikes resume, according to CNN.
Donald Trump said the need for fresh US strikes against Iran was “highly unlikely” if Tehran accepts a “very solid” agreement, the US president told CNN in a telephone interview. He nevertheless said the United States had identified infrastructure that could be targeted if strikes resumed, including 38 bridges that they could destroy within an hour, according to CNN.
The United States and Iran are meanwhile continuing operations against ships in the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting energy and other commodity exports. The US military said it fired on the rear of a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, putting it out of service as it attempted to pass through the US blockade.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards' navy, for its part, says two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz and a third suffered an explosion. The semi-official Fars agency reported the incidents, while Reuters was unable to confirm the reported strikes. Iran said it would respond by targeting US and Israeli targets.
Donald Trump's position comes after JD Vance's proposals to resume nuclear negotiations with Iran.
