South Africa's electoral commission has dismissed 25 temporary staff in KwaZulu-Natal for partisan conduct and breaches of the electoral framework during the 2026 local elections. The province, which accounts for 32% of the country's electoral staff, recorded a turnout of 49%, according to Ntombifuthi Masinga, the commission's provincial officer.
South Africa's Electoral Commission (IEC) has dismissed 25 temporary staff recruited for the 2026 local elections in KwaZulu-Natal, for partisan conduct and other breaches of the electoral framework, according to the IEC. The announcement was made on Sunday by Ntombifuthi Masinga, the IEC's provincial officer, at the official presentation of the election results.
KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 32% of the staff mobilised by the IEC for these elections and had 921 voting districts, 43 local municipalities, one metropolitan municipality and 10 district municipalities, according to Masinga. Turnout there reached 49%, while spoilt ballots accounted for 1.45% of votes.
The results announced remain provisional, with some objections filed after the deadline still to be examined by the IEC. The province accounts for 11% of objections filed nationally, and the commission must proclaim the final results by 11 November at the latest, according to Masinga.
The announcement follows several stages in the processing of local results in KwaZulu-Natal. On 7 November, 87 results to be verified in KwaZulu-Natal had been reported, while objections to local results were declared resolved the same day. On 8 November, late objections could change local results in KwaZulu-Natal.
