Local elections: 446 objections reviewed in KwaZulu-Natal

South Africa’s electoral commission received 446 objections concerning local election results in KwaZulu-Natal, eight of which were withdrawn and two upheld. Its provincial head, Ntombifuthi Masinga, says the complaints generally do not meet the legal requirements to suspend the proclamation of final results, according to SABC.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in KwaZulu-Natal had received 446 objections concerning local election results by around 2pm on Saturday, two of which were upheld and eight withdrawn by their authors, according to provincial electoral officer Ntombifuthi Masinga, quoted by SABC News.
The IEC says complaints that do not meet the legal requirements under Section 65 are treated as ordinary complaints when they have no material impact on the results. The MK Party, which came first in four municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, had asked the IEC not to announce the final results before all objections had been processed.
The 14,245 results slips expected for municipalities in the province have been received, according to Ntombifuthi Masinga. The IEC is continuing to review the objections before finalising the electoral process.
The checks follow the announcement of 87 results to be checked in KwaZulu-Natal, published on 7 November. The IEC had also said the same day that objections to local results had all been resolved.
