South Africa’s electoral commission is examining a first challenge to the counting of local election votes in Abaqulusi Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. Parties, independent candidates and voters can lodge objections until 5pm on Friday, ahead of the final results due to be announced on Sunday, according to the South African Electoral Commission.

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is examining its first challenge to the provisional results of the local elections in KwaZulu-Natal. The appeal, lodged in Abaqulusi Municipality, concerns the counting process, provincial electoral officer Ntombifuthi Masinga, quoted by IOL, confirmed.

Political parties, independent candidates and members of the public have until 5pm on Friday to lodge objections under section 65, including in cases of irregularities during voting or counting that may have affected the credibility or integrity of the election, according to IOL.

Ntombifuthi Masinga said a report would be submitted to the commission to help it rule on the challenge. The IEC must examine all objections before making its decisions, IOL reports.

The electoral commission plans to announce the final results of the KwaZulu-Natal local elections on Sunday, after examining the appeals lodged, according to IOL.
