ActionSA says it has won 38 wards previously dominated by the ANC in Gauteng’s townships, including Tembisa, Atteridgeville and Soshanguve. Its national president Michael Beaumont believes the party could now join municipal coalitions, according to TimesLIVE, which quoted him during the counting of the local election.

ActionSA claims to have won 38 wards previously held by the ANC in townships in Gauteng, South Africa, as the counting of the municipal election continues. Its national president, Michael Beaumont, gave this assessment to TimesLIVE.

The party claims all the wards in Tembisa except one in Atteridgeville, as well as eight in Soshanguve. In Johannesburg, it says it won eight wards in Soweto and made gains in the city centre, Ivory Park and Diepsloot. Beaumont expects a similar result in Mamelodi, where counting is still awaited.

ActionSA, which presents itself as the third political force in Gauteng’s metropolitan municipalities, says it is ready to govern with other parties if they share its goals of stability and sound service management. Beaumont said his party had prepared a coalition framework before the election, while negotiations will have to take place within 14 days in 105 municipalities.

The provisional results are part of an election in which the ANC, the ruling African National Congress, is expected to lack a majority in the country’s eight metropolitan municipalities, according to results reported on 5 November in the overview of South Africa’s municipal elections.
