Zelensky hopes Democratic victory will help bring peace

By , based on Daily Post

Volodymyr Zelensky believes a Democratic victory in the US midterm elections could strengthen Washington’s aid to Ukraine and help end the war with Russia. The Ukrainian president says increased support would encourage Vladimir Putin to resume negotiations, according to an interview broadcast by ZDF.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes a Democratic victory in the US midterm elections could strengthen Washington’s support for Kyiv and open up new possibilities for peace with Russia, in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF aired on Wednesday 4 November. “There is now hope that this balance of power will allow us to receive more support,” he said, according to the Daily Post.

Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that increased US financial and military aid could lead Russian President Vladimir Putin to reconsider continuing the war. In his view, the prospect of increased US support could encourage Moscow to return to negotiations.

Russian and Ukrainian representatives are due to resume next week in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, talks held under US mediation. The talks had been suspended since the start of the war in the Middle East, in February. Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are leading the US discussions, according to the Daily Post.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s expressed hope came after the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections, announced on 5 November. Donald Trump had acknowledged the Democratic victory in the US elections on 4 November.
