Trump acknowledges Democratic victory in US elections

Donald Trump acknowledges the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections and says he is ready to work with Congress now controlled by their party. The US president nevertheless promises to veto laws he considers excessive, Daily News reports.

Donald Trump said he was “absolutely willing to accept” the results of the US midterm elections and to work with the Democrats, who will control the Senate and the House of Representatives. “We’ll probably work something out,” the US president told The New York Times, according to Daily News. In an interview with Fox News, he acknowledged that the Democrats had “done a good job” and “fought hard”.

Trump nevertheless warned that he would veto “insane” bills that the Democrats might send him, reminding them that he had that power. He also attributed part of the Republican defeat to the consequences of the war in Iran on petrol prices, while asserting that voters approved of his policy towards Tehran. On Truth Social, he also blamed Republican Texas governor Greg Abbott for his defeat by Democrat Gina Hinojosa, saying he had become a “Republican in name only”.

This acknowledgement comes after the Democrats’ victory in the midterm elections, announced on 5 November, and after the election of Gina Hinojosa as Texas governor, published on 4 November. It follows Trump’s statements about his veto as an “ultimate weapon”, also published on 4 November.
