Hubert Aiwanger, 55, Bavaria’s economy minister and the regional leader of the Free Voters, was found dead in a hotel room in Berlin. Police and prosecutors are investigating to establish the cause of death and determine whether a third party was involved, according to Berlin authorities.
Hubert Aiwanger, 55, Bavaria’s economy minister and deputy head of the regional government, was found dead on Wednesday in his hotel room in central Berlin. The police and public prosecutor’s office have opened an investigation to determine the cause of death and rule out possible third-party involvement, according to a statement from the German police.
The leader of the Free Voters, the junior partner in the Bavarian coalition led by Markus Söder, was in Berlin for the inauguration of an office for his party. He missed the event because he was feeling unwell, the tabloid Bild reports. Markus Söder, head of the Bavarian regional government, described his death as an “absolute tragedy”.
Hubert Aiwanger had led the Bavarian branch of the Free Voters since 2006. He was at the centre of a national controversy in 2023, after the discovery of Nazi leaflets in his schoolbag when he was a teenager in the late 1980s was revealed. He apologised, while refusing to resign.
