Morocco welcomed the expiry of MINURSO’s mandate after the Security Council failed to agree on its extension, following Russia’s veto of a US-backed proposal. The deadlock calls the future of the ceasefire and the UN mission in the Sahara into question, according to BBC Africa.
Morocco welcomed the expiry of MINURSO’s mandate, the UN mission responsible for monitoring the ceasefire in the Sahara, after the Security Council failed to extend its activities. Russia vetoed a US-backed proposal, while a rival Russian draft failed to secure enough votes, the BBC reports.
The outcome ends the mandate of a mission deployed for several decades in the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which claims independence for the Sahara. It also raises questions about the future of the ceasefire between the two sides, according to the BBC.
The Security Council failed to extend the mandate of MINURSO on 1 November 2026, after the Russian veto of the US resolution on the Sahara on 30 October. Russia had previously proposed extending the mission until October 2027.
