The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) forecasts a rapid strengthening of El Niño in the coming months, with a potentially strong level. The phenomenon could exacerbate high temperatures and alter rainfall patterns in several regions, including Tunisia, according to the organisation's latest forecasts.

The El Niño climate phenomenon is expected to rapidly strengthen and reach a potentially strong level between July and September 2026, according to the latest bulletin from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), published on 3 July. Models from the world's leading weather centres forecast a rapid development towards a high-intensity event.

El Niño could exacerbate high temperatures and alter rainfall patterns in several regions of the world, including Tunisia. The WMO nevertheless urges caution when interpreting the expected effects on the country, which could result in variable weather conditions. These forecasts come amid rain expected in central and southern Tunisia in the afternoon.
