Luxolo Namette, a United Democratic Movement (UDM) councillor for Nelson Mandela Bay, was found dead on Saturday in Motherwell, Eastern Cape, with a gunshot wound to the head, according to provincial police cited by IOL. The victim was 48 years old.

Police opened a murder investigation after the body was discovered at about 3:50pm on Umnulu Street, in NU9, Motherwell. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the suspects and motive were being sought, reports IOL.

UDM secretary-general Bulelani Bobotyane asked for the case to be examined by the Political Killings Task Team, the unit responsible for investigating politically motivated killings. The UDM believes Namette’s political activities or his responsibilities as an elected official could have motivated his killing, while calling for no assumptions to be made about the investigation’s findings.

Namette began his political career in the UDM’s youth branch before becoming a municipal representative and then chairman of the municipal committee responsible for oversight of public accounts, according to Bulelani Bobotyane.
