Sernic, Mozambique’s national criminal investigation service, seized 145.65 kilograms of methamphetamine in Chocas Mar, in Mossuril district, and arrested a Mozambican national. The drugs were divided among 152 bowls, according to Sernic, which linked the operation to the fight against transnational trafficking.
The Serviço Nacional de Investigação Criminal (Sernic), Mozambique’s judicial police, seized 145.65 kg of methamphetamine at Chocas Mar beach, in Mossuril district, Nampula province. A Mozambican citizen was arrested while in possession of part of the drugs, according to a Sernic statement.
The methamphetamine was divided among 152 bowls, according to Sernic. The operation comes as Mozambican authorities are concerned about the activity of international drug-trafficking networks in the country.
In October, Sernic director general Ilídio Miguel named Mexico’s Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, Brazil’s Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and a Pakistani network among the organisations active in Mozambique. He also accused these networks of seeking to infiltrate state institutions through corruption to facilitate their operations, according to O País.
Ilídio Miguel said the use of land routes and the coastal zone, particularly in northern Mozambique, had been declining since 2022, while air transport was becoming more important. Since January, at least six people linked to the Sinaloa cartel have been arrested in proceedings involving the seizure of five tonnes of fentanyl, according to the Sernic director general.
