The five foreign wounded in the Krakow shooting are of British, Portuguese, Russian, German and Austrian nationality, the Polish police told the PAP agency on Sunday. Ten Polish citizens are also among the wounded, including two police officers, bringing to 15 the number of people hospitalised after the attack carried out on Saturday by a young Pole presented by the authorities as "fascinated" by far-right ideas.
The condition of the 15 people wounded by bullets improved slightly overnight, but not all are out of danger yet, according to a police spokesperson quoted by Polish media. Six people were killed, including a British man. The gunman, seriously wounded by police and then operated on, was still in a critical condition on Sunday morning.
Identified in the press by his first name and the initial of his surname, Michal O., born in 2002, lived with his parents and his sister in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, a medium-sized town a two-hour drive from Krakow. Police announced on Sunday that they had discovered at their home the bodies of a 53-year-old man and two women aged 52 and 21, all with gunshot wounds, and seized seven firearms. Investigators, convinced he acted alone, are seeking to establish his motives and psychological profile.
The attacker had driven up to the edge of the market square in Krakow's old town, thronged with tourists, and fired at random at passers-by, taxi drivers and carriage drivers. After a chase with a local police crew, his black Subaru crashed into a vehicle stopped at an intersection. The attack comes the day after the initial toll of five dead announced on Saturday, before the toll was raised to six dead the same day.
