An official from Mozambique’s Tax Authority in Nampula has been arrested, suspected of receiving 100,000 meticais to facilitate the return of a seized vehicle. Investigators have two transfers of 50,000 meticais and are examining an allegation of pretending to have authority, according to a provincial anti-corruption statement.

An official from the Mozambique Tax Authority was arrested on 2 November in Nampula, suspected of demanding and receiving 100,000 meticais to facilitate the return of a vehicle seized by customs. The arrest was announced by the Nampula Provincial Office for the Fight Against Corruption, according to the Mozambican daily Notícias.

The official, assigned to the tax area directorate, is being prosecuted for pretending to have authority: he allegedly promised to facilitate the procedure even though he was not authorised to do so. Investigators collected proof of two electronic transfers of 50,000 meticais each, as well as information from the Tax Authority and provincial customs services on the rules applicable to seized vehicles.
