Former governor of Kenya’s Kiambu County, Ferdinand Waititu, was sentenced on Monday, 2 November, to 13 years in prison and fined 21 million Kenyan shillings in a corruption and money-laundering case involving 588 million shillings, according to Kenyans.co.ke. The sentences handed down by the Milimani High Court cover three counts: five years for the first, followed by four years for each of the other two.
The new sentences will run concurrently with the 12-year sentence imposed on Waititu in another corruption case in February 2025. They will therefore not extend his prison term. Judge Harrison Barasa also provided for substitute prison terms if the fines are not paid.
The case concerns funds allegedly embezzled from Kiambu County during Waititu’s term in office. The ruling comes amid a series of corruption cases in Kenya, where Davis Chelogoi was sentenced to three years in prison for land fraud on 2 November.
