Rescue teams have recovered the body of a woman beneath the rubble of the collapsed building in Eastleigh, in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Citizen Digital reports. The search, now in its eighth day, is continuing for those still missing.
Authorities said on Thursday that 16 people remained unaccounted for after checks carried out with the Kenya Red Cross and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. According to Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba, phone data placed nine missing people at the site shortly before the collapse; four other cases are still being investigated, and three families have not provided the numbers needed for tracking.
Rescuers have cleared about 80% of the debris and are focusing their efforts on the basement. Specialised equipment has detected possible signs of life beneath the rubble, and teams are trying to reach the areas concerned. The building, which was still under construction, collapsed on 23 October on 9th Street.
The collapse is also being investigated in relation to construction conditions. The Director of Public Prosecutions has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to examine possible negligence by officials, developers and construction professionals. This latest recovery follows the rescue of six survivors in Nairobi on 27 October and the announcement on 26 October that four survivors had been hospitalised.
