Gueta Chapo, Mozambique’s first lady, has called for oncology services to be extended to other provinces to ease pressure on cancer care, Rádio Moçambique reports. She spoke after learning about the clinical condition of patients transferred to the dermatology ward.
According to figures from Mozambique’s Ministry of Health cited by Rádio Moçambique, cancer causes about 17,000 deaths a year in the country, with around 26,000 new cases diagnosed during the period concerned.
The call follows Gueta Chapo’s appeal for funding for the reconstruction of Maputo’s oncology unit, after a fire struck the department at the capital’s central hospital on 1 November.
