Algeria's official APS agency disputes statements by Anouar El Anouni, a European Union spokesperson, concerning the deployment of Algerian troops in Niger, and also criticises Paris and Brussels. It says no official request for clarification was made to Algiers, according to TSA.
The Algerian Press Service (APS) says the European Union made no official request for clarification to Algiers concerning the deployment of units of the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) in Niger. It cites authorised sources and thus disputes the comments by Anouar El Anouni, a European Union spokesperson, according to TSA.
APS says any such European démarche would have been rejected by Algeria as interference in its internal affairs and sovereign choices. The Algerian agency also accuses Paris of using the European Union in its dispute with Algiers and describes Anouar El Anouni's statement as a “fabrication”.
According to APS, Anouar El Anouni is of Franco-Moroccan origin and his statement, read from a paper in response to a question from a French journalist, was allegedly prepared. The agency says the episode is part of what it describes as a “French campaign of harassment against Algeria” and accuses Paris of refusing to accept the changing balance of power in the Sahel.
The APS dispute comes after Algiers denied any EU request concerning its troops in Niger, published on 8 November 2026.
