The Lagos State Government warns that waste dumped in canals and drainage networks increases flood risks. During the monthly sanitation campaign, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu urged residents to maintain these practices beyond the last Saturday of the month, according to P.M. News.
The Lagos State Government has called on residents to stop dumping waste in canals and drainage channels, saying this practice worsens flooding. The warning was issued on Saturday 31 October during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, supervised in Ikorodu by Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of Lagos governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The state head of service, Bode Agoro, said Saturday’s exercise was the seventh since March. He said the Ministry of the Environment had been asked to clean the affected canals and that a project to rebuild one of them was being prepared with the relevant services.
Agoro nevertheless warned that dredging would have limited effect if residents continued to dispose of their waste improperly. The chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Akeem Dauda, said awareness campaigns were being conducted in neighbourhoods to end such dumping.
