Ghana has reduced the curfew imposed on Hamile, in Lambussie District, from 11 to six hours a day, with the period now set from 10pm to 4am. A total ban on carrying weapons remains in force, according to Ghana’s Interior Ministry, cited by 3News.
Ghana has reduced from 11 to six hours a day the curfew imposed on Hamile and neighbouring communities in the Upper West Region, following the fatal explosion during a border patrol. Since Thursday 5 November, the restrictions have applied from 10pm to 4am, compared with 6pm to 5am previously, according to Ghana’s Interior Ministry.
A total ban on possessing weapons, ammunition or any other offensive equipment remains in force. The ministry, headed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, warned that people found in possession of such weapons would be arrested and prosecuted. It called on residents, young people and traditional leaders to remain calm and express their grievances peacefully.
The revision of the curfew was enacted through an executive instrument following advice from the National Security Council. It comes after tensions in Hamile, where young people attacked Ghana Immigration Service facilities following the explosion. On 4 November, the minister visited the 37 Military Hospital in Accra to see the immigration officer injured in the explosion, identified by Citi News as Inspector Rashad Yussif.
The curfew was imposed on 3 November after the fatal explosion in Hamile. The toll subsequently released was three dead and four wounded by gunfire, according to the explosion toll.
