Ghana has imposed an 11-hour curfew in Hamile and neighbouring communities in Lambussie District following a dynamite explosion that killed an immigration officer and injured others. The measure, announced by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday 3 November, applies from 6pm to 5am every day and took effect immediately.

The ministry said the Minister for the Interior had taken the decision on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument. The government has also banned the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons in the area. Anyone found with these items will be arrested and prosecuted, the ministry warned.

According to preliminary information gathered from security sources in Hamile, civilians travelling along an unauthorised route reportedly encountered security personnel at a checkpoint. The government called on local chiefs, community leaders, young people and residents to remain calm and express their grievances peacefully.
