The Jatikay Centre is calling for a thorough investigation after 46.7 kilograms of cocaine were seized at Beirut airport in a consignment from Accra. The Ghanaian organisation disputes the Narcotics Control Commission’s explanation of a controlled delivery, according to the Ghanaian Chronicle.
The Ghanaian NGO Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building is calling for a thorough investigation after 46.7 kilograms of cocaine were seized at Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut. In a statement issued in Accra, its executive director, Adib Saani, questioned the effectiveness of Ghana’s anti-drug system and demanded explanations from the Narcotics Control Commission, according to the Ghanaian Chronicle.
The cocaine was reportedly transported from Accra by a Syrian national. The Jatikay Centre wants to know how such a quantity of drugs was able to leave Accra International Airport without being intercepted and is asking whether accomplices who facilitated its transit through Ghana have been arrested.
The organisation also disputes the explanation given by the Narcotics Control Commission, which says the arrest resulted from a controlled delivery operation conducted with the Lebanese authorities. It is calling for verifiable details on when the consignment was detected, the measures taken before the suspect’s departure and the exact nature of the operation, the Ghanaian Chronicle reports. The seizure was described as the largest in the history of Beirut airport.
