Ghana’s Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has urged municipal authorities to strictly enforce sanitation and planning rules, particularly in wetlands. He says haphazard construction and poor waste management encourage flooding and epidemics, according to 3News.
Ghana’s Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has asked metropolitan, municipal and district authorities to strictly enforce sanitation and physical planning regulations. He warned them that inadequate enforcement could encourage epidemics and worsen flooding, 3News reported.
During a working visit to Ellembelle District on 4 November, Joseph Nelson referred to the cholera outbreak that occurred in Ghana in 2024 and called for stronger health education in markets and food-selling areas. He also criticised unregulated construction in wetlands and the filling in of natural drainage channels.
The minister said he had sent a circular to local authorities to strengthen controls on construction and prevent further occupation of wetlands. He warned that directors responsible for district administration would be held accountable if their planning departments failed to enforce the rules.
