A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer seriously injured in the explosion in Hamile, in the Upper West Region, is receiving specialised care at Accra’s 37 Military Hospital after being airlifted there. Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak visited him and assured his family that the state would cover all medical costs, according to a GIS statement signed by Barbara Sam, the deputy head of public affairs.
The explosion occurred when a patrol of four officers tried to intercept a tricycle carrying two people towards Burkina Faso along an unauthorised route. The occupants were carrying explosives, which detonated during the pursuit, killing an immigration officer and the two civilians in the tricycle. A second officer was seriously injured, according to Faisal Disu, deputy comptroller-general of immigration in charge of operations.
The minister urged the public to comply with the rules governing the possession, transport and use of explosives. The explosion and its aftermath had already been the subject of an investigation announced by Ghana on 3 November.
