Angolan association Osoko is preparing a roadmap to demand reparations from former colonial states, including Portugal. Its president, Tânia de Carvalho, described slavery and colonialism as “terrorist acts” and announced the initiative, according to Jornal F8, citing the Lusa news agency.
The association will organise the third international seminar on historical reparations with the International Pro-Reparations Committee, from 9 to 14 November in Mbanza Kongo, in Angola’s Zaire province. The meeting is expected to bring together specialists, academics, political officials and activists to prepare a document to submit to the African Union and the United Nations, Tânia de Carvalho told Lusa.
The Osoko president said reparations would not be limited to financial compensation. In particular, she is asking Portugal to recognise the crimes committed in Angola. The country will celebrate the 51st anniversary of its independence on 11 November.
