The Katambi-2 well, drilled by Sonangol in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin, produces 41 million cubic feet of gas and 1,160 barrels of condensate a day. Future development could exceed 100 million cubic feet daily and strengthen Angola’s energy supply, according to the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels and Sonangol.
Sonangol is preparing to develop a natural gas discovery in Block 24, off Angola’s Benguela province, following successful tests on the Katambi-2 well, according to the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) and Sonangol Exploration and Production. The well produced a stable 41 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and 1,160 barrels of condensate daily.
Production potential could exceed 100 million cubic feet of gas per day, according to the ANPG and Sonangol. Sonangol president Sebastião Gaspar Martins described the discovery as a “pure gas” field and said the company intended to meet Angola’s energy needs, with the possibility of exporting any surplus.
Drilling of Katambi-2 was completed in August. The well passed through two productive intervals totalling about 331 metres. It is 1.3 kilometres from Katambi-1, which was drilled in 2014 and 2015. The two companies describe the flow test as the first conducted in Angola in an unassociated gas reservoir, meaning one where the gas is not primarily associated with an oilfield. The project’s commercial viability remains subject to technical and economic assessments. Its development will also have to take account of fishing activity in the area.
