On an official visit to Ouagadougou on 5 November 2026, Malian President Assimi Goïta and his Burkinabè counterpart Ibrahim Traoré reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating bilateral and security cooperation within the AES, and announced the forthcoming holding of the Burkina-Mali Grand Joint Commission on Cooperation.
Burkina Faso and Mali have announced the forthcoming holding in Ouagadougou of the 11th session of their Grand Joint Commission on Cooperation, at the end of the official visit of the Malian President of the Transition, Army General Assimi Goïta, on Thursday 5 November 2026, according to a joint communiqué published by the two countries.
The two heads of state instructed the ministries in charge of foreign affairs to take the necessary steps for the effective holding of this session. Welcomed at Ouagadougou international airport by the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Malian leader discussed bilateral, confederal, sub-regional and international issues with his counterpart, with the fight against terrorism and the strengthening of relations in sectors of shared interest among the priorities raised.
On the confederal level, the two presidents stressed the need to strengthen solidarity within the AES, the alliance of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and to pursue a pragmatic partnership serving peace, stability and sustainable development. They welcomed the progress they attribute to the Confederation in the areas of defence, security, diplomacy, development, health and education, and praised the conditions of hospitality and security enjoyed by their nationals living in the confederal space.
This visit follows the announcement of Assimi Goïta's arrival in Ouagadougou for a bilateral visit on 4 November. It comes a month after Ibrahim Traoré received AES and Togo customs officials on 19 October.
