The European Union is seeking details on the scope, purpose and legal basis for the deployment of Algerian soldiers in Niger. The EU's foreign affairs spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, said Brussels was closely monitoring the situation during the European Commission's press briefing in Brussels on Friday 30 October.

The EU makes its support for measures promoting peace and security in the Sahel conditional on respect for international law, the sovereignty of states and the protection of civilians. It is also calling for security measures to be transparent and proportionate and to help reduce regional tensions, while saying it favours peaceful and lasting solutions, according to Anouar El Anouni.

The European request comes five days after the Algerian Parliament approved the deployment of units of the People's National Army to Niger. Algeria approves troop deployment to Madama, Niger was announced on 25 October, after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's notification. Algiers cites the protection of shared energy interests to justify the operation.
