At least 10 people are believed to still be trapped in the basement of the building that collapsed on 23 October in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as rescue teams continue their search on the 13th day of the operation, Citizen Digital reports. Four survivors were pulled from the rubble and two bodies were recovered, both victims being women.
The identification of the two bodies is scheduled for Thursday at the Nairobi mortuary. Families who believe a female relative could be among the victims have been invited to come forward for post-mortem examinations and DNA analyses, according to the Kenyan authorities.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has called for an amendment to the law to allow county governments to bring proceedings against developers who fail to comply with construction rules. The building collapsed on 23 October at around 1pm while it was partially occupied, with tenants in the basement and on the ground floor.
Searches are continuing after the recovery of the two women who died under the rubble, announced on 3 November. They follow the discovery of 11 people sought under the rubble, reported on 1 November.
