Kenyan police seized 170.8 kilograms of cannabis worth 5.124 million shillings, or about €35,000, from a vehicle abandoned after a fatal collision on the road linking Malaba and Webuye, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The driver of the Mazda CX-5, suspected of transporting the drugs, fled after the accident that killed motorcyclist Muzungu Munialo.
Investigators from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau, based in Bungoma, and their colleagues from Webuye West had laid an ambush after receiving information about the vehicle, registration number KDY 338F. The driver accelerated after spotting the police before hitting a red TVS motorcycle bearing registration number KMFV 109F. Officers found 162 bundles of cannabis wrapped in yellow adhesive tape while searching the Mazda.
The investigators also found a second number plate, KF2 8588, on the back seat. The DCI suspects it was intended to conceal the vehicle’s identity. The Mazda and the drugs were handed over to the Bungoma anti-narcotics office, which is searching for the driver and trying to identify the network allegedly involved in the trafficking.
