Pregnancy-related mortality in Kenya has fallen from 362 to 287 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics’ 2025-2026 demographic survey. Deliveries in health facilities have reached 91%, while the World Health Organisation has called for this progress to be turned into concrete improvements.
The pregnancy-related mortality rate in Kenya has fallen to 287 deaths per 100,000 live births, from 362 in 2014, according to the Kenya Mini Demographic and Health Survey 2025/2026, published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and cited by Capital FM.
The survey also recorded an increase in deliveries at health facilities, from 88% in 2022 to 91%, as well as births attended by skilled personnel, from 89% to 92%. The proportion of women who had attended at least four antenatal care visits reached 72%, up from 66% previously.
Neema Kimambo, the World Health Organisation representative in Kenya, called for these figures to be translated into concrete improvements in health services, nutrition, reproductive health and the response to gender-based violence. The findings should be used to guide planning by national and county governments, according to Capital FM.
