Former Kenyan senator Samuel Poghisio has joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), leaving the Kenya African National Union (KANU) to seek the party’s nomination for the West Pokot governorship in 2027, reports Capital FM. He was welcomed at ODM headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday 3 November, accompanied by a delegation of county leaders.
Poghisio represented West Pokot in the Senate from 2017 to 2022 and served as majority leader. He also held ministerial and assistant ministerial positions under the presidencies of Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
The race for governor could also pit Poghisio against former governor John Lonyangapuo and Pokot South MP David Pkosing, both of whom have expressed interest. Incumbent governor Simon Kachapin is also expected to take part in the contest.
Poghisio’s arrival at ODM comes a day after Johnson Sakaja, Nairobi’s governor, joined the party after leaving the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
