Nigerian analyst Sam Amadi is urging the country’s electoral commission to commission an independent audit of the disputed voter register, rather than calling for intervention by President Bola Tinubu. The director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought says INEC, which is responsible for the process, must itself address the alleged irregularities, according to Arise News.

Nigerian political analyst Sam Amadi is calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commission an independent audit of the voter register, amid controversy over alleged irregularities, the Daily Post reports. He says the commission, not President Bola Tinubu, whom he regards as one candidate among others, is responsible for verifying the register.

Speaking on Arise News, Sam Amadi urged INEC to acknowledge its responsibility, apologise to Nigerians and set a clear timetable for cleaning up and verifying the register. He warned that suspicions of irregularities could undermine confidence in the electoral process, at a time when citizens’ interest in voting was growing.

INEC recently identified 1.5 million anomalies in the register, according to its review of the register. Nigerian groups have also demanded explanations about the irregularities, as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
