US Democrats seek blue wave against Trump

The US Democratic Party hopes to win majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate in the midterm elections in order to reverse some measures of Donald Trump’s administration. The strategy depends on making sufficient gains in both chambers of Congress, according to Expresso das Ilhas.

The US Democratic Party hopes to win the midterm elections due to be held on Tuesday in the United States and secure majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in order to reverse some policies of President Donald Trump, Expresso das Ilhas reports. Democrats are leading in a large number of general election polls.

A ‘blue wave’ would allow them to control both chambers of Congress. In 2018, during Donald Trump’s first term, the party won 40 seats in the House of Representatives and elected 235 representatives out of 435, while Republicans retained their majority in the Senate with 53 of 100 seats.

Immigration policy is expected to be among the issues considered by a Congress controlled by Democrats. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, supports abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, ICE, and overhauling migration policy. In Texas, James Talarico, involved in a tight Senate race, instead proposes reorganising the agency, whose personnel exceeded 20,000 under Donald Trump.

House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has also promised to investigate what he calls corruption within the Trump administration if he becomes majority leader.
