Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Cristiano Ronaldo could no longer sustain the physical demands of the playing style he wanted to introduce at the English club. The Dutch coach said the Portuguese forward remained an exceptional player, but had not been able to perform at the same level for seven or eight years, in an interview with ESPN NL on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag said he had explained his expectations to Cristiano Ronaldo after taking charge at Manchester United in 2022. They included maximum intensity in training, repeated efforts and the fitness to play at the highest level in the Premier League, the Champions League and for Portugal.
