Erik ten Hag believes Cristiano Ronaldo began losing his ability to perform at the highest level after leaving Real Madrid in 2018. The former Manchester United manager dated the decline to the Portuguese player’s time at Juventus, in an interview with ESPN.

Erik ten Hag believes Cristiano Ronaldo stopped being able to play regularly at the highest level after leaving Real Madrid in 2018. “From Juventus onwards, it was over,” said the former Manchester United manager during an interview with ESPN, according to the Daily Post.

Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 matches for Juventus, where he played for three seasons. After returning to Manchester United in 2021, he scored 27 goals in 54 appearances during his second spell.

The relationship between the Portuguese forward and Ten Hag deteriorated during the 2022-2023 season. In November 2022, Ronaldo accused the manager of betraying him in an interview with British presenter Piers Morgan. His contract with Manchester United was then terminated, before he left for Saudi club Al-Nassr.

Ten Hag, now technical director of FC Twente, also praised Real Madrid’s ability to let players leave when it considers the time right. Ronaldo left the Spanish club after winning four Champions League titles with it.
