Kimi Antonelli, an Italian Mercedes driver, won the Formula 1 World Championship at the age of 20 years and 68 days, becoming the youngest champion in the discipline’s history. He secured the title by finishing third in the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City on Sunday, according to Agence France-Presse and Vanguard.
Dutchman Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, won the race ahead of Briton Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari. Antonelli thus claimed the first world title of his career at the end of a Grand Prix held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Vanguard said he was the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 and that he beat Sebastian Vettel’s 2010 record by more than three years.
The title came after Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson were penalised after their collision in Mexico City, followed by Lewis Hamilton taking pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix, announced on 1 November.
